“Ah, there you are. I was hoping I would find you here,” Eugene said, no more than a quarter of an hour after we had left Eliza and Cornelius down in the parlor. We had just reached the drawing room nearest our rooms when he approached us from down the hall, a concerned look on his handsome face.

“We just left your cousin,” Felix said.

Eugene’s brows rose hopefully. “And? What did she say?”

I said, “I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I think the suspicion you and Bram share is unfounded.”

His face fell. “Well…I suppose that is a good thing,” he said. “I hope neither of you thought we wanted her to be guilty.”

“Of course not,” I said, shaking my head. “But the only thing I think her guilty of is being far too adoring of her husband.”

“Yes, they certainly continue to suffer from the newlywed bliss,” Eugene remarked. “Though I shouldn’t say suffer. According to Bram, it has been difficult to get Eliza to focus on or commit to anything since she married, as all they seem to want to do is be together. Not that it is a problem, of course. I am pleased she married someone she loves. I think she would have been quite intolerable otherwise…”

“You didn’t tell us she and Mr. Dossett were almost engaged,” I said.

“Oh, that’s right,” he said. “I had nearly forgotten, as it was, what…two years ago, now? I take it she explained that to you?”

“She did,” I said. “And she explained that they both met their current spouses, and everyone ended up happy.”

“Indeed, they did,” Eugene said, rubbing his fingers over his chin. “Perhaps Bram and I were too quick with our assumptions, and for that…well, then I should apologize.”

“I understand why you were worried,” I said. “It makes perfect sense, given what happened to your sister. Your concerns were born out of worry of the same thing happening to your cousin. Eliza is grieved at Mr. Dossett’s death, but also at the distress it will have caused her brother, and Mrs. Dossett. She realizes the families have been close for a long time, but that she still is somewhat distant from the death.”

“They also made it clear that the pair of them heard nothing last night,” Felix added. “And so it seems we have come back to the start of it all empty handed.”

“Now that you believe Eliza innocent, can I take that news to Bram to ease some of his worries?” Eugene asked.

I opened my mouth to answer, but hesitated. “I am not so foolish as to write off anyone just yet,” I said. “The death was only discovered some hours ago. I imagine there are many who are still trying to wrap their minds around what happened, including most of your family. Their thoughts will be on the late Mr. Dossett, not on any minute details that could be helpful. No, I will not dismiss her entirely yet, but as of this moment, I see no reason to question her further.
